Scott Shaw

Co-founder, Chair

Founder, former boat captain, and longtime supporter of community generosity, Scott built Captain Scott Legacy Society on one simple belief: everyone has something to give.

A Canadian immigrant turned successful and now retired businessperson, he came to volunteering later in life and has not looked back since. He continues to support countless nonprofits as a philanthropist, board member, and advisor, and even hosted volunteer celebrations aboard his own boat.

Greg Helem

 Late Co-founder

Greg was the ripple starter behind Captain Scott Legacy Society. A talented writer, photographer, and quiet community servant, he gave generously behind the scenes as a driver for a DTES seniors group, church administrator, and board director.

He envisioned and named Captain Scott Legacy Society, dreaming of a world where people of all ages give with kindness. Though he passed away in 2022, his vision continues to guide the work we do every day. We miss you, Greg.

Tong Guan

Director

Tong helps keep Captain Scott Legacy Society running smoothly behind the scenes, from charity compliance to financial administration. With a decade of nonprofit experience and three active ventures to his name, he brings both strategic thinking and creativity to everything he does.

He is also our in-house photographer, videographer, and tech wizard, always ready to capture a moment or troubleshoot on the spot.

Theresa Shaw

Director

A steady compass and warm hearted mentor, Theresa is the calm and grounding presence our Board of Directors lean on.

Alongside a full-time job and family life, she serves on several boards including the Burnaby Hospital Foundation, volunteers as a CNIB Puppy Raiser, and runs a community connector platform. Theresa truly believes volunteering is a way to connect with your community, meet great people, and get more out of life.

Serena Li

Project Manager

The visionary behind Captain Scott Legacy Society’s programs, Serena shaped the organization’s current offerings from the ground up. Firm in her belief that projects should drive real impact, her proudest creation is the Volunteer Wave program, which was born from her passion for using volunteerism to make life more adventurous.

She loves volunteering with the elderly, removing invasive species, and advocating for neurodiversity and disability rights.

Chloe McClain

Visual Communications Manager

Part storyteller, part designer, and part community hype person, Chloe helps bring the mission of Captain Scott Legacy Society to life through creative projects, website design, and community storytelling. She especially enjoys volunteering through community meal programs and food outreach initiatives.

Outside of volunteering, she enjoys gardening, hockey, watercolour painting, and collecting more plants than she realistically has space for.

Marcela Alveño

Community Advisor

Marcela helps bring Captain Scott events to life as our Community Advisor. She’s hands-on, energetic, and always ready to jump in wherever she’s needed.

Free spirited and hardworking, she brings a can-do attitude to every event she’s part of. When she’s not at events, you’ll usually find her outdoors, at concerts, or spending time with friends.
