- Community Care Adventure 2024
The Community Care Adventure 2024, hosted by Captain Scott Legacy Society, was a resounding success, thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of our volunteers and community partners. Throughout the month of April, we embarked on a series of group volunteering events aimed at fostering community spirit and making a tangible difference in the lives of others. Kicking off the adventure was "Gifts of Hope" with Best Buddies UBC on April 6th. Over 30 volunteers came together to assemble 156 care packages for the Kettle Society in Vancouver, spreading messages of hope and positivity to those in need. On April 7th, we visited the Surrey Central/Whalley neighbourhood for a clean-up session with the Youth Rising Foundation. Get this - we filled up six full bags of garbage! This clean up opened up our eyes to the needs of the neighbourhood - we can’t wait to return to this location to do even more! The next week on April 12th, our small group of 6 volunteers absolutely loved the experience at the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and can’t wait to go back! From distributing food to clients and restocking food to breaking down cardboard boxes, our small yet mighty group made a huge difference that night! The following day on April 13th, youth ages six to fifteen participated in a Gratitude Workshop at MacLean Park, learning about kindness and community connection through Indigenous teachings. On April 14th, our biggest volunteer event happened at English Bay on a beautiful, sunny day! Volunteers from all over the city came to our event to help conserve our shorelines, get rid of marine pollution and city garbage, and share data on what litter is on our grounds directly to ocean scientists to help them change policy! We filled six huge bags of garbage and one big bag of recyclables. Continuing our partnership with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank on April 19th, our volunteers demonstrated unwavering commitment to serving the community. On April 20th, our commitment to community care extended to supporting new parents at BabyGoRound. Partnering with this wonderful organization, we brought donations from our baby gear donations drive and volunteered in their office and warehouse. It was a heartwarming experience to contribute to the well-being of budding families and witness firsthand the impact of our collective generosity. Finally, on April 26th, we co-hosted a Youth Volunteer Training Workshop with the South Vancouver Neighbourhood House and the OWL Program, empowering young minds with the knowledge and skills needed to make a difference in their communities. As we reflect on the success of Community Care Adventure 2024, we extend heartfelt gratitude to all our volunteers, community organizations, and partners for their invaluable contributions. Your time, effort, and passion have made a meaningful difference in the lives of many. We look forward to seeing you again next year at the Community Care Adventure 2025, as we continue our journey of compassion and service together. Thank you for being part of this incredible adventure!
- Behind the Scenes: A Day of Volunteering with Greater Vancouver Food Bank
Embracing the power of community and giving, our team recently collaborated with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank on February 10, 2024. Our team of 5 volunteers who devoted 6 hours of their time, made a significant impact in our community. From distributing food, providing customer service, sorting produce, packing cardboard, to offering parking support – our dedicated volunteers took on diverse roles to ensure every task was successfully accomplished. Some volunteers were having so much fun that they purposely skipped their snack breaks to do more good – now that's dedication and enthusiasm! This inspiring collaboration not only enabled us to actively contribute to our community's well-being but also allowed us to witness the passion and dedication behind the Greater Vancouver Food Bank's mission. Each month, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank provides healthy food to over 16,000 individuals and families in need and 130+ Community Agency Partners across Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, and the North Shore - the Greater Vancouver Food Bank plays a vital role in addressing food insecurity. - Community in Action: Our Third Volunteer Neighbourhood Cleanup with the Chinese Community Policing Centre
Third time's a charm! On Saturday, March 2, 2024, Captain Scott Legacy Society embarked on another volunteer-run neighbourhood cleanup with the Chinese Community Policing Centre. We explored all over Chinatown, including the local skate park and Andy Livingstone Park. With each cleanup, our volunteers grow more familiar with the neighbourhood's litter hotspots. Many volunteers who take transit, also took notes during their walk from their bus and skytrain stops - mapping out where they found garbage along the way. Here's a glimpse into our latest cleanup stats: Total Cleanup Time: 2 hours Number of Volunteers: 11 Bags of Garbage Collected: 8 Notable Finds: An increase in batteries, lighters, and soiled blankets Despite other neighbourhood cleanup initiatives by other groups, there was a lot more garbage than expected. Our dedicated volunteers took on the challenge and put in a lot of work! At one point, we realized we didn’t take enough garbage bags with us and needed to coordinate meeting up with team members after we split up to collect garbage. Times like these serve as a powerful reminder of how crucial it is to stay actively involved in our community and take proactive steps to maintain the cleanliness of our neighbourhoods. As we reflect on our third cleanup, we're grateful for the unwavering support of our volunteers and partners, and we look forward to continuing our mission of creating a cleaner, safer community. Want to join us on our next cleanup? Become a Volunteer Ambassador! If you're thinking about volunteering but not ready for a long-term commitment, check out our upcoming Community Care Adventure 2024. Until next time, let's continue making a positive impact—one cleanup at a time!

From high school heroes to our esteemed seniors, our volunteers are determined to do good in the world. With 1.5 hours of dedicated clean-up time, we transformed Andy Livingstone Park, ensuring a safer community for its residents. Clean up stats: total clean up time: 1.5 hours 20 volunteers Collected 12 small Neighbourhood Clean Up bags After the cleanup, we gathered at New Town Bakery to celebrate the joys of volunteering.
